New Athletic Complex planned for Southridge Mall

Deceber 08, 2011

Community leaders and representatives of Southridge Mall announced plans today to build a $6 million athletic facility. The 100,000 square foot project will be located on the west side of the mall.

The complex will be used by the Iowa Barnstormers football team. It will also be used as an indoor soccer practice area. Jeff Lamberti, president of the Iowa Barnstormers, says the facility will serve more than just his team, and is intended to help youth sports groups as well.

Southridge Mall has been struggling recently, with many stores closing, including 3 major stores this year. Southridge has been looking for ways to use available space at the mall, and many southsiders have been waiting for new opportunities to bring more people to the area. In this economy, it has been difficult to find businesses or other groups who need as much space as department stores used to occupy at Southridge.

No word yet on when this new athletic complex will be completed, but hopefully it will fill the need for this type of facility in Iowa, while also putting a large section of Southridge Mall to good use.
